MotoGP rookie sensation and Moto2 champion, Johann Zarco had everyone at the edge of their seats yesterday when he claimed his maiden Pole Position for the Dutch GP, after a thrilling see-saw battle with defending MotoGP champion Marc Marquez.

But Valentino Rossi had other plans, although he had qualified only in fourth. But again, Rossi has always been known as the “Sunday rider.”

Maverick Viñales (Movistar Yamaha MotoGP) struck back after a tough Catalan GP to top Day 1 at the ‘Cathedral’ – the TT Circuit Assen – by over three tenths after a leap forward in FP2. The weather threatened in the afternoon after a fully dry FP1, but track conditions remained good enough for the field to improve in the afternoon.

The rider from Roses was followed by Jonas Folger (Monster Yamaha tech 3) on the combined timesheets as the German rookie impressed once again, with reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) shooting back up the order in FP2 to complete the top three overall on Friday.

Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) topped the timesheets by three tenths at the post-Catalan GP test, leaping ahead of Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Maverick Viñales and Monster Yamaha Tech 3’s Jonas Folger at the end of action at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Number 93 improved on his fastest time in Q2, and only just over a tenth off Saturday’s pole position time.

His Repsol Honda Team teammate Dani Pedrosa was also fast, ending in P4. Pedrosa did 53 laps, Marquez 82, with the rider from Cervera blasting to the top late on.  The two Spaniards focused on settings, getting ready for the coming rounds including the upcoming Dutch TT at the Assen Circuit.

Perhaps the biggest sensation from MotoGP was the announcement that the Buriram International Circuit (also known as the Chang International Circuit) in Thailand will host the championship for three years beginning 2018, bringing the total rounds to 19.

KTM Malaysia’s factory rider and 2016 FIM Asia Supermoto Champion, Gabit Saleh, in addition to Malaysia’s international trials rider, Acoi Pangkolo, set up a challenging course at KTM Malaysia’s MX track at Sungai Buaya, near Rawang.

GABIT WINS 2ND ROUND OF THE 2017 MALAYSIAN SUPERMOTO CHAMPIONSHIP (From Malaysian Supermoto Championship Press Release)

2017 Malaysian Supermoto Championship (MSMC) Round 2 Taman Tasik Permaisuri Cheras to Host Round 2 of MSMC

 

KUALA LUMPUR, 26 APRIL 2017 – Round 2 for the 2017 season of the Malaysian Supermoto Championship (MSMC), the country’s premier and largest supermoto competition, will again take centre stage on 6th and 7th May 2017, at Taman Tasik Permaisuri, Cheras, from 9:00AM to 6:00PM. Admission is free to the public.

“Two-wheeled motorsport has always been a growing industry in Malaysia. We saw the opportunity to promote the sport in a positive manner, therefore, decided to uptake the role as the main organiser for the second round of MSMC,” said Anwar bin Mohd Zain, Director of the Culture, Arts, Tourism and Sports Department of Kuala Lumpur City Hall.

Last year the Dakar was a mess being that with little time for the challenge to start when 2 of the participant countries pulled out of the event!
