UO Police Department rolls out approachable officers on bikes

Cops in Oregon might just be your average guy/girl next door considering that the University of Oregon Police Department has made some changes to make the officers moe approachable and accessible. Last week, UOPD rolled out the black-and-green motorcycles with yellow “O” stickers. The motorcycles are a first for the force.

“People are going to want to come up and visit and talk about the motorcycles on campus,” said Capt. Alice Cary.

UOPD last week also changed its officer grooming rules. Officers now can grow trimmed beards. Cpl. Jared Davis and officer Chris Waggoner are among the first UOPD officers to grow beards and ride motorcycles.

“It’s a conversation piece (like the motorcycles) for them, too,” Cary said.

Public response to the motorcycles has been positive thus far.

The motorcycles are dual purpose, ready for rugged trails or smooth pavement. Officers also learned how to ride their bikes in every condition.

“We can go to places where patrols cars can’t,” Cary said.
